Alison's paintings and prints reflect her feeling for music in both a rhythmic approach and an attempt to harmonise colour and form. For her, the medium of oil paint, with its potential richness and vibrancy of colour, has immense possibilities for colours to 'sing' and come to life in juxtaposition with each other. Her interest is in how colours 'talk' and resonate with one another . Shape and form play an important part, indicating themes such as doorways, portals and pathways. The eye is led to entries that take the viewer on a journey into the picture as well as back out again, round corners, leading sometimes behind and sometimes in front. Landscapes most often come to mind.
Alison often overlays colours, some of which are opaque whilst others are transparent and veiled depending on the depth of tone and view of underpainting she wants to achieve. She has an interest in both direct, spontaneous, gestural painting as well as more considered over painted compositions that show the history of the painting process. At times these approached merge.
